Gilas Pilipinas will face Iran without Carl Tamayo in its next FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers game. The national team ruled out the forward after he suffered a sprained ankle during its overtime victory over Jordan.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas announced the roster change late Saturday. Gilas coach Tim Cone selected Justin Arana to replace Tamayo for the important Basketball matchup at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Arana, who recently joined the national training pool, could make his Gilas Pilipinas debut against Iran. His addition gives the coaching staff another frontcourt player as the team tries to build on its narrow 82-81 win over Jordan.

Carl Tamayo Sidelined by Ankle Injury

Carl Tamayo sprained his ankle during the third quarter against Jordan and did not return. Although he walked off without assistance, the swelling ruled him out of the Iran game. Gilas won the Basketball contest 82-81 in overtime and replaced Tamayo to avoid worsening his injury.

Important details surrounding Tamayo’s absence include:

  • He suffered a sprained ankle against Jordan.
  • The injury occurred during the third quarter.
  • He was able to leave the court under his own power.
  • He did not play for the remainder of the game.
  • His ankle was considered too swollen for the Iran matchup.
  • Justin Arana was selected as his replacement.

Justin Arana Receives Gilas Opportunity

Justin Arana joined the Gilas Pilipinas roster after a strong PBA Governors’ Cup campaign with the Converge FiberXers. Coach Tim Cone selected the big man over guard RJ Abarrientos to replace Carl Tamayo and preserve the team’s frontcourt depth.

Arana can contribute size, rebounding and interior defense against Iran. If he plays, the Basketball matchup will mark his debut for the Philippine senior national team.

What Arana Can Add Against Iran

Replacing Carl Tamayo is not simply a matter of putting another name on the roster. Tamayo offers mobility, shooting range and the ability to operate in different areas of the floor. Arana has a different playing profile, meaning Gilas may have to adjust certain parts of its approach.

Arana can provide help closer to the basket. His physical presence may allow the Philippines to compete for rebounds, protect the paint and set stronger screens in half-court situations.

Against Iran, Gilas may look to Arana for the following:

  • Additional rebounding on both ends of the floor
  • Physical defense against Iran’s frontcourt players
  • Screens that create space for guards and shooters
  • Interior scoring when opportunities develop near the rim
  • Energy and fresh legs during demanding stretches

The adjustment does not necessarily mean Arana must reproduce everything Tamayo contributes. Instead, Gilas can use his individual strengths while asking other players to cover the spacing and versatility lost through Tamayo’s absence.

FIBA Rules Allow the Roster Change

The replacement complies with FIBA regulations for the qualifying window. Teams are allowed to modify their active roster as long as the incoming player was previously registered in their official pool for that window.

Because Arana was already part of the Gilas Pilipinas pool, he was eligible to replace Carl Tamayo. The rule allows national teams to respond to injuries and other roster concerns without adding an unregistered player at short notice.

RJ Abarrientos was another eligible choice, but Cone’s selection of Arana preserved the team’s frontcourt depth. Choosing a big man also provides a more direct positional response to Tamayo’s absence.

Gilas Faces a Quick Turnaround

The game against Iran comes shortly after Gilas endured an overtime battle with Jordan. That quick turnaround creates an added challenge because the players must recover physically while preparing for another demanding opponent.

Gilas can take confidence from its victory, especially after maintaining composure in a close finish. At the same time, the team must address the loss of Carl Tamayo and integrate Arana into its planned rotation with limited preparation time.

The adjustment will require clear roles and disciplined execution. Iran presents a different Basketball challenge, and Gilas cannot depend only on the momentum created by the Jordan win.

A New Test for the Philippine Frontcourt

Tamayo’s injury removes a valuable forward from an important qualifier, but it also creates an opportunity for Justin Arana to show what he can contribute at the international level.

Arana enters the lineup after proving himself with Converge in the PBA. His rebounding, size and interior play could provide useful support as Gilas attempts to overcome Tamayo’s absence.

With Carl Tamayo unavailable, the focus now shifts to how quickly Arana can adapt and how effectively Gilas can reshape its frontcourt. The roster change adds another storyline to a crucial Philippines-Iran Basketball showdown at the Mall of Asia Arena.
