Gilas Pilipinas will begin its Asian Games Basketball title defense against Bahrain on September 11 at the Aichi International Arena in Nagoya, Japan. The Gilas Pilipinas Asian Games Basketball team enters the tournament as the defending champion after winning the 2023 gold medal in Hangzhou.
Bahrain is expected to provide a tough opening test with four naturalized players who bring size, strength, and experience. Gilas must stay focused throughout the game as it begins its campaign with a new-look lineup.
Gilas Starts Its Asian Games Campaign

The Gilas Pilipinas Asian Games Basketball campaign begins with three important group games. After facing Bahrain, the Philippines will play Kazakhstan on September 12 and China on September 14.
The top two teams in Group C will automatically move to the quarterfinals. Because of this format, a win against Bahrain would give Gilas a better chance of reaching the next round. It would also reduce the pressure before the games against Kazakhstan and China.
Gilas defeated Bahrain, 89-61, during the 2023 Asian Games. Justin Brownlee finished that game with 20 points and 10 rebounds. CJ Perez and Ange Kouame also scored 15 points each. However, the Philippines cannot depend on that past result because Bahrain now has a stronger roster.
Bahrain Brings Four Naturalized Players
Bahrain named four naturalized players for the tournament. Former NBA player JaKarr Sampson is the biggest name on the team. He played for five NBA clubs before continuing his career in other professional Basketball leagues.
Bahrain’s four naturalized players are:
- JaKarr Sampson – A former NBA forward who brings scoring, strength, and professional experience.
- Elijah Thomas – A 6-foot-11 center who can score, rebound, and defend near the basket.
- Uros Ilic – A 6-foot-10 frontcourt player with experience in three-on-three Basketball.
- Kelechi Austin Ajukwa – A 6-foot-6 guard who gives Bahrain more size in the backcourt.
Bahrain also has local scorer Mosti Rashed. He helped Manama win the first West Asia Super League championship in 2023. Gilas must watch his outside shooting while also defending Bahrain’s bigger players inside the paint.
Bahrain Players Gilas Must Watch
The Philippine defense will need to prepare for these key players:
- JaKarr Sampson, an experienced forward who previously played in the NBA
- Elijah Thomas, a tall center who can challenge Gilas near the basket
- Uros Ilic, a big frontcourt player with three-on-three experience
- Kelechi Austin Ajukwa, a large guard who can defend and attack
- Mosti Rashed, a reliable local scorer with regional league experience
A Different Gilas Team Enters the Tournament
Coach Tim Cone will use an all-PBA lineup for the Asian Games. Several regular national-team players are unavailable because the tournament is outside the normal FIBA schedule.
Justin Brownlee was also unable to take his expected place on the roster. Calvin Oftana arrived in Japan less than two days before the Bahrain game to complete the lineup. His late arrival gives him limited time to practice with the rest of the team.
Gilas will depend on players such as Justine Baltazar, Justin Arana, Brandon Bates, and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser in the frontcourt. Zavier Lucero and Don Trollano can provide size, energy, and flexibility at the forward positions.
The team also needs to improve after losing two tune-up games against South Korea. Those defeats showed problems with scoring, defense, and ball movement. Still, Cone believes the players can correct their mistakes before the opening game.
What Gilas Must Do to Win
Gilas must handle several important tasks against Bahrain:
- Protect the basket against Bahrain’s tall players
- Avoid careless passes and unnecessary turnovers
- Move the ball to create open shots
- Stop Bahrain from getting easy fast-break points
- Help one another when defending bigger opponents
- Fight for rebounds on both ends of the court
Good defense will be important because Bahrain has different scoring options. Gilas must stay patient on offense and avoid forcing difficult shots.
An Important First Test for Gilas
The Gilas Pilipinas Asian Games Basketball opener will show whether the new lineup is ready for tournament pressure. Bahrain is stronger and more experienced than before, so the Philippines should not treat the game as an easy assignment.
Gilas may have a different roster from the team that won in Hangzhou, but its goal remains the same. The players will try to protect the country’s place at the top of Asian Games Basketball.
A victory over Bahrain would give the Philippines a strong start and useful confidence before facing Kazakhstan and China. More importantly, it would move Gilas one step closer to the quarterfinals and keep its gold-medal defense on track.
