The gilas pilipinas south korea basketball tune-up series ended with two heavy defeats for the national team before the Asian Games. Gilas suffered a 69-42 loss in the second and final game at the Suwon KT Sonicboom Arena on September 6, 2026.

The result followed an 81-55 defeat two days earlier. Both games were part of the Hana Bank Invitational and gave the Philippines its final competitive tests before defending its Asian Games men’s Basketball title in Japan.

Gilas Falls Behind Early in the Second Game

Sedrick Barefield opened the Basketball scoring with a midrange jumper, but Korea answered with a 19-0 run. Gilas managed only four points in the first quarter and entered halftime behind 38-14.

The Philippines failed to establish a consistent offensive rhythm against Korea’s organized Basketball defense. The lead reached 37 points in the third quarter when the hosts moved ahead 53-16.

Although Gilas showed more effort in the second half, the early deficit was too large to overcome. Korea maintained control of the Basketball game and completed the 69-42 victory without facing a serious comeback.

Korea Controls the Game From Long Range

Korea’s outside shooting created major problems for the Philippine defense. Yu Ki-sang led all scorers with 15 points and made five of his eight three-point attempts. Twelve of his points came during Korea’s strong opening quarter.

Yeo Jun-seok added 14 points and five rebounds. Lee Hyun-jung produced an all-around performance with 11 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, and two steals.

Korea moved the ball well and regularly found open shooters. Its spacing forced the Gilas defense to cover more ground, while its rebounding prevented the Philippines from creating enough second-chance opportunities.

Zavier Lucero Leads Gilas Scoring

Zavier Lucero was the only Gilas player to score in double figures. He finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Adrian Nocum added nine points and three assists. Barefield and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser contributed seven points each. Justine Baltazar did not score but collected 10 rebounds and recorded three assists.

The main Philippine contributors were:

  • Zavier Lucero: 14 points, six rebounds and three assists
  • Adrian Nocum: nine points and three assists
  • Sedrick Barefield: seven points
  • Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser: seven points
  • Justine Baltazar: 10 rebounds and three assists

Only six Gilas players scored in the game. Five members of the lineup, including Robert Bolick, finished without a point. The limited production placed too much pressure on Lucero and prevented the Philippines from building a balanced Basketball attack.

First Tune-Up Also Ends in a Blowout

The first gilas pilipinas south korea basketball tune-up ended with Korea winning 81-55 on September 4. The Philippines lost by 26 points despite stronger individual performances from Baltazar and Nocum.

Baltazar recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Nocum scored 10 points. However, Gilas could not maintain enough offensive consistency to challenge Korea throughout the contest.

The second game followed a similar pattern. Korea gained control early, while the Philippines spent most of the match attempting to recover. Gilas lost the two tune-ups by a combined 53 points.

What Gilas Must Improve Before the Asian Games

The back-to-back defeats do not affect the Asian Games standings, but they exposed clear problems that require immediate attention.

Gilas must focus on:

  • Starting games with greater energy and defensive discipline
  • Improving passing and off-ball movement
  • Creating higher-quality scoring opportunities
  • Closing out faster against three-point shooters
  • Receiving offensive contributions from more players
  • Building chemistry within its limited preparation period

These Basketball tune-ups allowed the coaching staff to see how the team responds against a fast, disciplined opponent. Correcting every concern may be difficult before the tournament, but improving the opening quarters and offensive execution could prevent another early collapse.

Brownlee’s Availability Remains Uncertain

Gilas played the second game with only 11 players while waiting for clarity regarding Justin Brownlee’s participation. Brownlee played a major role in the Philippines’ gold-medal run at the 2023 Asian Games.

His scoring and leadership could strengthen the lineup. However, Gilas must prepare to compete using its confirmed players rather than depend entirely on his possible return.

Philippines Prepares for Group C

Following the gilas pilipinas south korea basketball tune-ups, the national team will travel to Japan for the Asian Games. The men’s Basketball tournament runs from September 10 to 20.

Gilas begins its Group C campaign against Bahrain on September 11. It will then face Kazakhstan on September 12 before completing the group stage against China on September 14.

The two losses showed that the Philippines must improve quickly. Gilas now has to correct its slow starts, strengthen its defense, and develop a more balanced offense before beginning its Asian Games title defense.
