LeBron James is expanding his influence beyond Basketball through a partnership with the PGA Tour. The NBA star and his foundation will bring a two-day golf event to Akron, Ohio, focused on youth development, mentorship and opportunities for aspiring professional golfers.
The LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational will take place on July 6–7, 2027, at the South Course of Firestone Country Club. It will connect students from the foundation’s I Promise program with golfers working toward professional careers.
Although LeBron James built his global reputation through Basketball, his growing passion for golf inspired him to use the sport as another way to support young people and invest in his hometown.

Introducing Young People to Golf
The partnership extends the work of the LeBron James Family Foundation through its I Promise program. The initiative provides educational tools, resources and support to more than 1,400 students in the Akron area.
I Promise helps students and their families succeed in school and prepare for future opportunities. Through the PGA Tour partnership, participants will be introduced to golf, mentorship and possible careers connected to professional sports.

The Invitational will also support golfers attempting to reach the professional level. Players from the Pro-Bound Five program will participate in the event and engage directly with students and amateur competitors.
The PGA Tour’s Pathway to Progression initiative helps college golfers move toward professional competition. Selected players can receive opportunities within the Advocates Professional Golf Association circuit.
The APGA Tour was established in 2010 to create more opportunities for minority golfers, particularly Black athletes. Including these competitors in the Akron event can give developing players additional exposure and meaningful competition.
The Invitational aims to:

- Provide competition for amateur golfers
- Increase exposure for diverse golf talent

Firestone Country Club’s Golf History
Firestone Country Club has been part of Akron’s professional golf history since the 1954 Rubber City Open. The venue has hosted several major tournaments and many of the sport’s leading players.
The course hosted the PGA Championship in 1960, 1966 and 1975. It also staged several World Golf Championship events, including eight victories by Tiger Woods. His final WGC victory at Firestone came in 2013.
Hosting the Invitational at Firestone connects the youth-focused project with one of Ohio’s most recognized golf venues. The event will also help preserve a PGA Tour presence in Akron.
For LeBron James, the location carries personal meaning because the tournament will be held in the city where he grew up and began his journey toward becoming a Basketball star.
